I tore a 2030 gas engine (219CI)down a year ago and am in the process of putting it back together. The tech manual says to be sure and install the pistons and connecting rods with the marks to the front. I don't see any marks, such as F or a dot or a wedge on the piston or rod. The rods are marked 1 thru 4, the pistons have not been removed from the rods. Do the cylinder numbers on the rod go to the right or left side of the engine?? Appreciate any help. Harold Headrick

I can only relate my experience on you problem. first clean of the piston head. There is in most cases a notch or an arrow pointing forward. Second look at the rod. Some Deere rods have the word front cast into them. Third look for an orefice on the rod side just above the crank boss this should point toward the camshaft side of the engine. It sprays oil to lube the followers. Other than that thats all I can offer.
My boss at an rebuild shop gave me some predissasembly instruction I`ll pass to you.. always bring no. 1 cyl to TDC andcheck the timing marks. Dont be afraid to prick punch your own if it will help assembly later. Keep everything in order, front to rear and left to right. Hope I have been of some help.
