Richard, first if it's now negative ground [it was built positive ground] is the ammeter wired correctly for negative ground? [if the wires weren't swapped on the ammeter to work at negative ground it will now read backwards]. Turn the headlights on & see if the ammeter reads a discharge, if not it isn't going to read a correct charge. ~If the ammeter is wired correctly the next step is to polarize the generator... Ground the [F] post on the generator [smaller of the two] then momentarily run a jumper wire from the [BAT] to the [GEN] terminals at the regulator, you should see a spark, if so it is polarized, if no spark suspect no power to the regulator [BAT] terminal or open field in the generator. ~If it still doesn't charge run the engine at fast idle then ground the [F] post on the generator, [does it charge now?] if so suspect a faulty regulator, open in the wire from the [F] post to the regulator, or a bad regulator ground...then with the [F] post still grounded connect a jumper wire from the [BAT] terminal at the regulator to the [A] post on the generator [does it charge now?] if so suspect an open in the wire from the generator [A] post to the regulator [GEN] terminal or a defective regulator...If it still doesn't charge suspect a bad generator...To test the generator, disconnect the fan belt & both wires from the generator & run a jumper wire from the[BAT] terminal on the regulator to the [A] post on the generator, it should motor, then ground the [F] post on the generator, it should slow down. If it doesn't motor suspect stuck brushes, an open in the armature, a bad generator ground or other internal generator problem, if it motors but doesn't slow down suspect an open in the field or a brush problem... ~Run some of the above tests & post back with questions....
