Hello I have a 1944 JD A.
After I start working her the axlw seals start to leak. So how hard is it to change them? And what else do I need to know to do this Thanks Ira

I am going to replace the outside seal by a normal metric oil seal. You have to remove the outside cub off the original one and leave the one on the axe. A metric size will fit than.

Ira, make sure the oil in the rear is at the proper level. I am fairly sure it is possible for the hydraulic oil to leak into the rear. If you are losing hydraulic oil and not seeing any leaks you just may have a problem that is not all in the axle seals.

Ira, the outer axle seal is a felt ring held in place by the retainer. They just seal grease in and dust out. If the seals appear to be leaking oil, you likely have other problems, like the inner oil seals outside of the bull gears leaking. This requires bull gear and axle removal. If it's just grease coming out, you will need to remove the wheels and hubs, and then the seal retainers. Be careful while removing them, as they are probably no longer available new. Then it's just a matter of removing and replacing the felt seal, and reinstalling the retainer. However, you might want to consider doing the inner seals also, since you will have the rear-end pretty far apart at that point, as far as having the hubs and wheels off. After that, it's pretty simple to remove the back cover, remove the cotter pins and the axle nuts. Then remove the axles and bull gears and you can access the inner seals. This also works about the best for removing the outer retainers, as the outer bearing will push out the retainers without damaging them. I would highly recommend getting an I&T manual for your tractor, as they are relatively cheap, have good info, and will save a lot of headaches while doing these types of repairs.
