I hope it is a leaky head Gasket

I started my 35 "D" today for the second time. I put new rings in the engine and only have approximatey one running hour on it. The left petcock keeps spitting traces of water when I start it. When I had the head off this summer, I noticed that somebody had put permatex all over the old head gasket. I put a new gasket on and soaked it in oil and torked to specs. I ran a straight edge over the head and did not find anything unusual. Tonight I looked in the spark plug hole and can see traces of water weeping in at the head gasket.

A mechanic who works on old tractors said to put Non-hardening Permatex 80017 on the head gasket. He said they always put that on old tractors they work on. Does anybody have any experience with this Permatex?

I looked at the head and block very thoroughly when I had the engine apart. I do not think the water is coming from a crack. Any suggestions?

Cheg, I use #3 Permatex on most 2-cylinder head gaskets I install. None is put on the fire rings though. The use of Permatex will require a mandatory re-torque after a few heating & cooling cycles. ~On your "D", you might try a re-torque before pulling the head again. Maybe a re-torque will help it seal.

When you talk about fire rings are you referring to the metal wrap on the gasket on the inner perimiter of the cylinder circle ?
Thanks

Marty, yes. The fire rings are the metal bands around the cylinders.
