Could someone tell me what motor oil is recommended for a 1951 John Deere MT and also what is the recommended hydraulic oil?

Alan, on the motor oil: it depends on what was used in it before & the expected usage over the winter.
~If that M has had nothing but non-detergent oil used in it then you should stick with the non-detergent oil, [the M uses a by-pass type oil filter & it only filters part of the oil at a time so any junk that would break free due to high detergent oil usage will end up in the bearings].
~It would probably be a good idea to pull the oil pan & see if there is a deep build up of crud, if so clean it & use non-detergent oil, if it is fairly clean use about any oil you want. The M [especially with a little engine wear] doesn't have great oil pressure so I would recommend 30 weight in the summer & if used in the winter 10W30. You can use multi-weight in the summer also but will probably find the oil pressure will run a little on the low side. I don't recommend synthetics or any of the newer super slick oils as the M has no valve seals & not the greatest in engine sealing so the chance of oil leaks & oil burning increase with the use of synthetics. They won't hurt the engine though.
~On the Touch-O-Matic hydraulic oil: again it depends on what was used & the expected winter usage. If nothing but non-detergent was used then stick with that, if the system is crud free then use a modern higher detergent oil. The difference is the hydraulics on the M dont have a filter & non detergent oil wont break the crud free & carry it suspended in the oil like HD or detergent oil so there is less chance of fouling an internal valve If the system is dirt & crud free a detergent oil will keep it cleaner & carry the dirt out at change time. Depending on the system operation & expected usage anywhere from a 20 weight to 30 weight, to the use of 10W30 for cold operation will work. If the system is weak then 30 weight will help it perform better, if the usage is in below 10*F temps then either a 10 or 20 Weight will perform better. Or if the system is clean now a 10W30 will work good. I use 10W30 in my 40 for snowplow usage & 30 weight in my M that doesnt get used in the winter. A good middle of the road is start with 20 weight & see if it works good in the summer heat & winter cold, if so stay with that. If the lifting capacity is low in the summer heat or the system wont respond fast enough in the winter adjust the oil weight until it will.

Alan,

My manual is dated March '53 and recommends 20w for temps up to 90 F then switch to 30w. When it gets like tonight, that is below 32, the manual says to use 10w. It goes on to say use the same oil in the Powr-Trol you're using in the engine. If it stays below -10 F for long periods, the manual specifies 5w.

My manual is moot on the subject of detergent vs. non detergent oils. If someone has steadfastly used non detergent oil for the last 50 years and you switch to a detergent oil, you should be prepared to drain and replace the filter every 3 to 5 hours until the crud is cleaned out. You may cause a few oil leaks the built up crud has been sealing in the process.

It seems to me there have been some advances in petrochemical engineering over the last 50 years, so I use a 10w-30 synthetic formulated for older engines. Others will say using anything but 30w non detergent direct from the crude will lead to eternal damnation. Guess we'll see; but for the time being I'm comforted by finding no such reference in scripture.

Don't know of any reason to use detergent oil in the "Powr-trol" (it's spelled that way in the manual) except that non detergent is not readily available within 10 to 15 miles of here. I use a straight 20 weight, and things seem copacetic.

Probably the best favor you can do your MT right now is to order a owners and a service manual from JD. Think of it as cheap insurance to keep yourself from making expensive mistakes.

Best of luck with your new tractor,

Steve
