Sliding gear shaft drive gear

Am currently overhauling the sliding gear shaft drive gear (that's a mouthful)and couldn't get to the bearing inside the drive gear and where the sliding gear shaft goes into the back of it. This is because I can't seem to pull the gear off the Behlen box on the left side of the trans case on order to gain access to any bearing clips or anything like that. Anyway, I am not sure the bearing in the trans is bad. I have the reduction gear off and if I hold the drive gear evenly with my hand and turn the sliding gear shaft, where is no play. If I let go, there is a little wobble because the end of the drive gear is pulled down by gravity, therefore it does not sit firmly on the sliding gear shaft. I originally took it all apart to replace the bearing that sits to the right of the reduction gear, the one on the end of the drive gear. You can see it if you take off that little cap on the reduction gear cover. It was shot. BUT I think the inner bearing is still good. The bearing which hold the drive gear within the trans case wall is good too. I just don't want to put it all back together, and have to go through it again....I just don't know how tight the drige gear is suppossed to sit in there. I have tried to be as clear as I can. This is a hard subject to explain. Oh yeah, the tractor is a 1940 4spd A. Thanks from a very frustrated guy in Mich...AC

AC, you are so close with it that far apart that not checking the other bearings will mean a lot of work later if you have a bad one in there. I wouldn't worry so much about the bearing between the drive gear & the sliding gear shaft, those seem to hold up well. I would be more concerned with the L/H bearings on the sliding gear shaft & the countershaft I find those are much more apt to be pitted or worn, [especially if the bearings were loose or run loose].....

Thanks, Clooney

I have checked the countershaft bearings; The left one looked good, and the right one looked good, but the retainer or what I am calling the retainer, the part that holds the little roller bearings in place, is a little loose on the inner race. What I mean is that I can slide the retainer holding the roller bearings on the race. There is no real slop, and the rollers are in there tight, but I can slide it around a little. Maybe this is a characteristic of a tapered bearing....As far as the sliding gear shaft is concerned....I have what I think is a Behlen box on the tractor, and I cannot get the top gear off. Four different posi lock pullers later, and I gave up. I did grab the shaft and try to move it up down left or right, and it felt tight...The tractor had been overhauled in the 60's but I don't know if the tranny was touched...If you say that the bearing which goes between the sliding gear shaft and the drive gear are tough, I will take your word...It feels ok, but the drive gear must depend on that bearing on the far end to keep it straight. Without it, like it is now, it can wiggle. That's all I can figure...I will dig into it tomorrow morning and will post a follow up later in the day...would like to have it done this weekend
Thanks much...AC
