I just purchased a '64 JD1010RUS. After trailering it home, I went to back it off the trailer and it died. Come to find it ran out of gas. I filled it up and I get nothing. The engine cranks over, but it never catches. So far I have replaced the coil and battery, cleaned the plugs, carb and sediment bowl. I blew the gas supply line clean. It just doesn't want to start. I have tried to pop the clutch and it starts but dies as soon as I push in the clutch or it comes to a stop. It seems like it should be the easiest fix in the world, but I just can't figure this one out. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Bill

Worked on the tractor more last night. Turns out the needle in the carb was dirty and allowing a bunch of fuel into the engine. Got that fixed. Next, checked the coil and it has good spark, but at the plugs the spark is very weak and intermittent. Should I replace the condenser and points or just do the whole distributor? The cap and plug wire appear to be new.

Take the gas line off the back of the carb, then remove the brass L that goes into the carb. The inside of it is a very fine screen filter. Mine was full of fuzz. You can't really get inside to dig out the junk but I used an air hose and did a lot of blowing every direction on the screen until I worked out all the crud little by litte. When it is clean you can hold it up to a light and see through it.

I will try that tonight. I replaced the plugs and capacitor in the distributor last night and the spark has gotten noticably better. But it still doesn't start

Took carb apart again last night. Cleaned and polished every part. Took L fitting off as well. Put it all back together and after about a 10 sec crank, the tractor started to catch. It took several more starts, but it finally started. Thanks Loren, not sure that the L fitting was clogged, but I appreciate the help anyway. Bill

If all else fails, Take a close look at the insulator in the side of the distributor that has a wire going to the points. Mine cracked right at the point of entry and allowed it to short out intermitte

Well I got the tractor running this past Saturday. Ran all day and I was quite happy. Ran out of dayl;ight and expected to finish up Sunday morning, but as luck would have it, it wouldn't fire up. So I have decided to rebuild the carb. Got a rebuild kit, soaked it, sandblasted, blew air through the passages and I am now in the final stages of repainting. I noticed on Sunday that I had fuel dripping from the throttle arm lever. So it looks like the carb is just adjusted wrong. After all is said and done, I should have a nice "new" looking carb. Hopefully the tractor will start. I'll probably install Friday or Saturday.
