Uh....Mike. Could you be mistaking a misfire for the uneven firing order of your John Deere? They do fire pop-pop and then nothing happens for about 540 degrees of rotation. At idle the uneven firing order is more noticeable.

Well, I have had a number of different experiences when it came to messing with these poppers...Never like anything exactly like what you are going through, but here is a few things that might make a difference....Was the motor set up before you got it? Did it ever have water in the bore? What color is the smoke that comes out of the exhaust(if any at all) It could be that the valves are sticky, or the tappets need to be adjusted..neither would correct that symptom, BUT it could help a little. The carb could be rich...did you clean the carb? If you did, did you mix up the load and idle needles? They are different, though they look the same...None of these tractors ran perfectly or evenly until you got into the 50-60-70 on up series because of the fuel distribution through the manifold..I am alittle new to this too, but have spent all this summer messing with about 7 different JD's so I am beginning to learn a little...If the head gasket was bad, you could have water in the oil, a cross-fire which can ruin a block and a head) (did this to my dirt late model ) or it could blow white vapor because of the water, and would have no power. I have found that carb adjustiments are critical. 2 or 4 little clicks over can make a world of difference. See that the plug wires are insulated so they don't jump spark. That Mag puts out a lot of juice...I know I didn't fix it, but these are a few good things to remember in the future ...Hope I have helped a little... AC
