Just got home this morning (3:00AM) with my second John Deere tractor in as many years, a 1949 M. I already have a '56' 420W, and really don't NEED another project tractor, so what is it that makes me spend my hard earned money, and drive 900 miles in one day, for a second piece of tired green iron? How does that green paint enter your blood stream? Is there a cure, short of "buying the farm"?

If you hear the sound of a two cylinder John Deere when you are very young, like about three years old, you are infected for life. First of all, you associate that sound with 'tractor" and everything else seems strangely anemic; and secondly, there is that HAND CLUTCH. Coaxing a big John Deere into a tight spot with a hand clutch is, well, hard to explain to non-John Deere people. Once you have qualified by hitting at least three fence posts because you were too young and not yet strong enough to SNAP that clutch out in time, you are definitely IN THE CLUB. I was away from two cylinder JDs for about 35 years, and when I hopped up on a Model G for a spin it was just as if I had never been away. We now have a nice '52 A.

CJDAve,

Thanks for giving me a chuckle! I recognize that story...have a similar version of it myself. My GrandDad's JD taught me to stand up to stop so that big lever wouldn't smash my knee. Barn siding and the grille screens were the "uh oh, I'm in trouble now" problems I remember. And learning to back a wagon with the JD instead of the Farmall was when I knew I was growing up.

RK, sounds like you've got a classic case. Might as well give up all hope now. There's no cure for the cause, and the only way to treat the symptoms is to buy more green stuff.

Well in my case it all started with a iron 70 toy tractor It lasted and the front wheels turned with the steering wheel. The ford plastic lasted one day. the oliver grill fell out. the pup ate the tire on the allis. the farmall plastic rear wheels broke, Granddad fixed them with some metal ones. The 70 just lasted and lasted. I now have 11 pieces of john deere construction equipment, 3 four wheel drive deere tractors two big deere combines and a lot of other green equipment. The people at deere credit know my first name.I am just now starting on the antique addiction. yes they will be john deere as My kids may want to sell them someday and I want them to be able to get my money back. John deere quality came through even in a toy 70. p.s. dad had red tractors

For me the fever entered the bloodstream through my young ears. In my early days...not too long ago i'm only 40, a neighbor farmed with a G and 70 diesel...both of which had straight pipes. I can still remember late at night hearing the thud thud thud as those tractors worked those clay knobs. :-)

I have come to believe the green paint enters the bloodstream through the pores of your skin when you work on them for the first time. Even though I have overhauled mine, repainted, retired, rewired, etc... every time I walk around it, I see some little something else I want to do. Good thing I don't have allot of extra money laying around or my horse farm would look like a JD Rest Home. Good luck finding the cure.

I'm not sure U want to hear this.. but there is NO cure for the Green Fever.. even if you are forced to sell them all.. U can still have it... Buying the farm will not help.. U will then need more tractor to work on the farm. (This does sound like a good idea.. haha.) buy all U can.. Furthest I have travel was about 2400 miles round trip.. (It was my grandfather's tractor.. it could have been 5000miles, and I'd still have went.) closest, was about 3 miles.. The only thing that will make it better is to share what you learn and to pass it on to friends and family.. (Then they will understand the pressure.) Good luck

You guys think your bad, I'm only 17, and it's all I know. Most kids are out buying cars, instead I go out and buy a tractor. You got love that sound that a two cylinder makes.

I don't think a cure has been found. I am 51 years old and the first tractors I remember riding was a 1939 B and a 1936 D.When I was 6 my dad traded the B in on a new solid green 420 crawler and later bought a 1951 G { I still have them both } + 14 more. The more you play with'em the more you enjoy them.
