Hey all, I was wondering if the average JD dealer still carried the reduiction gear cover gasket, along with the bearing cover gasket that lies underneath it. I also need the gasket for the upper water pump where it bolts to the block.
Let me think, what else...I need the big gasket that goes between the power lift &PTO assymbly, between that and the rear end housing. Does anyone know what they cost? AC

Frequently the "overhaul set" of gaskets is cheaper that the sum of several individual gaskets. Also if I remember correctly, some were available in the set, but not individually.

AC, you don't mention what model, but like gwh posted, more than likely they're still available. I just ordered some gaskets for my '48 "G" a few minutes ago. They are generally pretty reasonably prices, especially when weighed against the hassle of cutting out new ones. If they don't have an individual gaskets, usually the complete gasket kits for an individual component are available. I've also been experimenting with using the flexible form-in-place gasket that is used on later tractors. It has worked well for installation, and I'm pretty sure it's going to remain leak free when exposed to oil. This is the same stuff used on newer tractors to seal final drives to differential housings and the like, so it should be up to sealing in gear lube between rockshaft housings and rear axles, brake assemblies and the other areas I've used it. The one thing you'll want to check on the the paper gaskets is that they fit correctly. I've found a few that must have been older that had shrunk some. A few minutes soaking in water expanded them enough to allow the holes to line up perfectly. This is not something exclusive to Deeres, as I've run into the same thing with gaskets from Ford for N series tractors.

Craig- be careful where you use form-in-place gaskets

Just be careful where you use the form-in-place gasket stuff. Certain areas require the thickness of the proper paper gasket for gear backlash and other critical dimensions. Like the rear axle houseing to transmission case on a A, B, G, etc,, tractos. That thick gasket controls the backlash/clearance between the gear teeth of the final drive gears.

Absolutely correct, and I should have posted that. I did use a gasket between the rear axle housing and the main case of my "G" for just that reason, although there is enough backlash there that I really don't know how big of an effect a few thousandths of an inch difference in thickness would have made. I also wasn't advocating the use of teh form-in-place material to anyone, just mentioning that I am trying it. So use it at your own risk.

Sorry about that guys, it's a 1940 A slantdash. The reason why I asked was because the JD dealer told me that I could no longer get the gasket that sits between the governor housing and the crankcase on my '46 A. I couldn't even get it in a full set. Consequently, I made my own. I don't mind it, but it is time consuming and it is starting to get cold up here in Michigan..I forgot to put what tractor I was talking about because I ws in a hurry...I was at school in a computer class, and the teacher wasn't in the room....Thanks..AC

AC, Call your local dealer and find out, most of that type of stuff they can get if it's not in stock. The dealer will need to know what model and serial# your working on! gwh
