Got a chuckle while glancing at the October issue; the cover shows what appears to be a very nice B with a cultivator, but the description on the inside says it is an H....Mr. Thinker must be embarassed to tears!

Mr. Thinker doesn't edit that part of the magazine----the Editor does, and yes, he is embarrassed that he let such a typo go through!! Oh well, even Mr. Thinker makes a boo-boo now and then!!!!

So, who are you really, Mr. Thinker? I know that Green Magazine claims that Mr. Thinker's replies are provided by a variety of experts, and my thought is that 95% of it is provided by J.R. Hobbs. I was just wondering if you are he, and if you are, why you don't post under that name, instead of the somewhat generic heading of Mr. Thinker. I also notice that most of your posts on this board tend to be nicer and more polite than Mr. Thinker's replies in Green Magazine, and lack the constant references to service, parts and operator's manuals. Please clarify this situation for me and anyone else that's wondering about the validity and identity of "Mr. Thinker".

I can get one of them, lol. I know that Mr. Rogers is actually Fred Rogers. I used to have a Mr. Wizard book that had his real name in it, but I lost the !@#$$% thing, lol. I'm sure some internet searching would turn it up, though. I just remain curious if the Mr. Thinker on this board has any tie to Green Mag. My thought is that he doesn't, but I would like to know for sure..... ..

I guess someone will just have to send Mr. thinker a couple of John Deere B manuals. You know they don't cost that much, Mr. Thinker.

I thought the same, that it was a nice early styled B with culivator. But much later in reading the mag, I read the caption to the cover photo, and after seeing it claimed an H, I went back to the cover to really examine the air stack. I remember the first 300 H's made had air stacks untill the intake was moved bellow the hood, but the belt pulley area really looks B to me. Can Mr Thinker be out there and shed some insight for G-Mag before we have to wait another month ?

Your info that the first 300 H's had air stacks is interesting, I've never heard of that before. I have a friend who has a very early H, I believe but wouldn't swear that it's #83 or something like that, and it has the air intake hole/screen on the left side of the hood. However, the experimental H (OX) picture shown in the March-April 1999 Two Cylinder Magazine does show an air stack. Can anyone confirn or refute that the first 300 production H's had air stacks?

third party image

The parts book only shows the side-of-hood air intake, starting at S/N H1000, which I believe was the first production serial number for that model.

I think you're right, Frank. According to my "Styled Letter Series" book, the prototype "H" tractors had a vertical air stack, but to save money and keep the cost down, they went to the side intake on the production units.

It's not an H -- really obvious things like brake drums outside axle housing, hood long enough to cover magneto, etc., etc., etc. In that same issue, the book review of another Motorbooks International publication (basically said pictures were nice, facts were wrong) made me wonder if GM's cover editor is an ex-Motorbooks guy...(just kidding, Mr. Hain)
