AC in 4030 not cold enough at high rpms?

I hope this question is OK to ask here. We added R-12 to the unit and it seemed fine at lower rpms. When we started working the tractor (baling hay), the air blowing out wouldn't cool the cab. My wife says she won't help if I don't get it fixed and I need a driver.(I told her she could load wagons, which went over REAL well!) Any suggestions? Thanks!

A worn fan belt or pulleys will drive at low rpm's but slip when reved up.

Richard, I had the EXACT same problem with my 4030 a couple of years ago. (Even the same situation with the wife baling hay!) Anyways I found out that the heater control valve was leaking. I took it off and even tried to blow through it and could not. But when I put it back on again, it still leaked under pressure. I spliced a ball valve inline in the heater hose supply along the engine and turn the valve off in the summer. Once in a while I turn it on in the summer to keep the antifreeze "fresh" in the heater core. Works great now! Check the other good ideas from other posters as they might help too. The return line from the heater back to the engine should not be warm at all. Hope this helps.

make sure the heater switch is not on.

I have to agree with the lower posts..clean the condesor.. then clean it again.. use soap and water... Is the compressor cycling when it gets hot?? Some of the early 30 series had a sensor on the line at the condenor on the right side.. It could be causing the compressor to cycle off because the condensor is plugged.. or just not working properly.. you can unplug/bypass this sensor..(but U will have NO protection to save the compressor if it runs low on R12, but a good quick test.) The later systems had a superheat switch on the compressor, and a fuse next to the compressor.. Too much heat or too low of psi in the compressor causes the fuse to blow... (not the problem U are having.) Also make sure that the water valve (heater) is not leaking by..
Good luck

Richard, the other posts bring up some very good points. A/C problems are generally pretty easy to fix. First, check the condition of your cab air filter and recirculation filter - over the top of your head in the cab. The cab air filter drops down, and the recirculation filter is located in the black plastic grille with 4 or so screws in it - directly in front of the cab filter housing. If dirty, blow the cab filter out, and you can wash the recirc filter out with water. With the recirc filter out, look at the evaporator and make sure it looks clean. If it's dirty, you'll have to raise the cab roof and remove the airbox cover to blow it out. Also check the condensor/oil cooler for plugging, and the radiator as well. Even if the condensor is clean, the fan is obviously on the other side of the radiator, so air has to be pulled through the radiator also. Also make sure your blower fan is working properly and is flowing sufficient air. If all of these check out, look at the sight glass on the receiever/dryer. It is located on the inside of the LH rear fender. Run the tractor for 10 minutes on max cool to stabilize the system. Look for bubbles in the sight glass. If there are bubbles, add R-12 until the sight glass goes clear and then stop. This method will work on R-12 but not on R-143a, as even a properly charged 134 system can still have bubbles in the sight glass. Also look for streaking in the glass or cloudiness of the refrigerant, as these can point to air or water contaminating the system. It sounds to me like you're under-charged. The expansion valve can flow enough at lower compressor rpms to cool decently, but at higher rpms, you're low-side pressure is dropping too much - possibly into a vacuum. Sorry about the long post, but I wanted to give you a variety of ideas to try.

It could also be that it is tripping the low suction pressure switch (if so equipped) which is just an under-charged condition. I drove a combine recently that was only marginally cool, and it was chaff in the condensor coils. It acted like it was undercharged also, but it wasn't. I just had to switch the unit off occasionally and the chaff would drop off the screen of the air inlet side of the condensor coils. Dave

Richard, did you use gauges or sight glass to add R-12?Could be condensor plugged from chafe.I have to wash and blow mine out regularly.Check tension on comp.belt.Check cab filter, when mine plugs it still blows but not enough if it's real hot!!!I changed mine to 134 and it cools better than it ever did on R-12.My tractor is JD4255 but air cond. are similiar and it gets hot in Tx.Jim B
