I am looking at buying a 720 or a 730. Is there any advantage of one over the other. Both of the ones I am looking at are pony start diesel's and run good. Same price. Just the 730 is across country and the 720 is here. What I am asking is is there a value difference, horsepower difference, ect... Thanks tractor gods

Brad, there is a perceived value difference between the 720 & 730 with the 730 usually bringing a higher asking price.
~On the mechanical end, there isn't any difference between the engines on a very late 720 & a 730 but there is some difference between an early 720 & a 730. The cam drive gear train was improved on the late 720/730, the clutch was improved on the late 720/730, the crankshaft end play & sealing was improved on the late 720/730 there were some other minor changes made in the late 720/730 engines. On the other hand a lot of early 720's have been updated using the later parts.
~The biggest price difference will be found in the options, like power steering, if one or both have the factory 3 point & if one or both have a wide front end. Those accessories alone can make a $2000.00 difference in tractor asking price....

Brad:
I don't claim to be an expert on the 720-730, however I've operated both and from what I have read and heard, both tractors are basically the same; i.e., mechanically the same, the only difference was in cosmetics. In my part of the country, the 30 series fetch a higher price, probably because they were the last of the 2 cylinder tractors. Just depends on what you want to do with the tractor.

I am no where neer an expert on these tractors. But A little info. Are these both row crops? If so. 720's with pony start made up about 90% of the sales. 730's with pony start made up about 10% of sales. There were only a few hundred of the 730 pony start row-crops made. The only reason I know this is because I want one BAD!!!

Good luck,

Will P

PS. I think the majority difference is comfort. Pretty much same HP.

I don't notice a difference in the horsepower if I am working long fields I prefer the 720's vertical steering wheel so I can stand up easily. If I am doing a lot of changing directions I prefer the slant steering wheel of the 730. My 2 cents

Brad, there is a difference in price. The 730 in the same condition as a 720 will bring more and cost more.( maybe $750-$1000)They are the same tractor. Figure $1.25 to $1.50 per loaded mile to haul the 730 and you run the cost up. If you have not seen the 730 or had someone you trust check it out you could be unhappy when it shows up.(been there done that) If you are going to use the tractor I would go with the 720. I assume you have seen it since you say it's where your at.

From what I understand if the 730 has a single wheel front end it is fairly rare, and it might be worth investing in. My family had one from 58 I think, to 67 and my dad said it was a good tractor. If however it is a regulare row crop or wide front end them maybe the 720 is better. thats just my thoughts, I could be wrong

Same tractor mechanically, the 730 was not tested at Nebraska, since the mechanicals are the same.

My vote goes with CLW. The tractor you can actually see and run is a better buy because you can see what you are getting. Some of the ads not all can be misleading. Besides I just like the looks of a nice 720 better.
