I put my head on lastnight & tourqued the head to specs per IT manual. The surface of the head has been trued but there are deep gouges .005" from where it was resurfaced. My question is will a good coating of "copper coat' or some other type of sealant work to keep it from leaking. And why does the manual say to soak the headgasket in oil for a few seconds then let it drain for 1 min before putting it on?

How did you measure the .005"? If the head was resurfaced correctly you should not have any tool marks aproaching .005". I have used the "soak in oil" method with good success. I don't understand the reason for it though. I have also used Copper Coat with good results, ditto: "spray on a coat of aluminum paint, don't let it dry and torque it up" method. The only really bad luck I have had with head gaskets has been with a solid copper gasket. Replaced it with a Deere gasket(asbestos type) and no more trouble. Important, must have good flat head and block surfaces. Hope this helps. If someone knows why to soak the gasket in oil, let me know.
Good luck,
Paul

Paul I am pretty sure the soak-in-on process for the head gasket when they were made of paper. The gaskets you buy now would not be soaked in oil as they are more substantial and also laminated. My '51 model A has not leaked yet and I used a light dose of Coppercoat. Just be sure to do a hot re-torque on the bolts after a few heat-cool cycles. Good luck!
