I just finished installing new rings on my 60 that has not run for 5 years. I put in a new set of points and condenser and I set the #1 piston to 5 degress ATDC as stated in the manual. I then grounded the #1 plug, moved the distributor forward and then slowly started moving it back waiting for a spark so I could set the timing. Well, no spark occured. I tried this many more times and still no spark.

My wiring is as follows. Battery to volt meter, Voltmeter to toggle and to generator. Toggle to positive side of coil. It is so simple I can not see a problem.

I checked the voltage at the coil and it is 12 volts when the toggle is on. I checked it at points and it is 12 volts. I replaced the coil from a tractor that runs and still no spark. I tried diferent plug wires, plugs, diferent ground positions, I even changed the new condenser and still I can not get a spark. I am at a lose on what to try next. I have 7 JDs and never had this problema before. It is such a simple sytem, I can not see whay I am not getting a spark. Can anyone suggest something that maybe I overlooked.

I came across the same thing when timing my distributor to the tractor after the restoration of my 50. I found it wouldn't spark if the unit was rotated too slowly on the mounting pad. I had to rotate it kind of quickly to get a spark at the plug wire. Instead, I used my VOM across the points in the Ohms mode with the ignition switch off to determine when the points made/broke contact. I set the flywheel to 5 degrees ATC on cylinder #1 and then slowly rotated the distributor until the points just contacted (learned this in aircraft powerplant class when timing mags). I then tightened the distributor bolts. It fired right up and I've never had to adjust it again. Good luck.

Charlie, are the points opening & closing? If not you won't get a spark.
~A couple of possibilities: Is the distributor in correctly? Is the governor on correctly so the drive flange is correct?
~See if you have 12 volts on the distributor side of the coil [points open] & "0" volts or close to it [points closed], if not you have point, point connection or distributor ground problems.
~If the points are opening & closing & the voltage on the dist.side of the coil varies from 12 to 0 volts you have coil, rotor or plug/plug wire problems.....

Is the rotor on?
