with our 630 we most always use 3 16 but it does get tough ounce in a while. if you want to plow all day an not have to worry about how tough it is get a 3 14. that way you will be sure am not worry about an have a good time at the same time. if the tractor has to work hard the whole time it isnt as much fun. we also the 316 with my 70 diesel an its alot more fun to plow with then the 630. the 70 just runs with the 316. just my 2 cents worth.

In this area, a 3 pottom would be enough. I've spent many hours with 620's and 630's with 3X14's. 3X16's will probably be alright, but the smaller plow allowed for most anything you encountered.

Like they said in school, do the math. It takes 8# to 12# of pull per sq in of the plow. 8# in corn stalks. 12# or more in old sod.

A plow 16" wide plowing 8" deep is 16x8=128sq" A plow 16" wide plowing 6" deep is 16x6=96sq" A plow 14" wide plowing 8" deep is 14x8=112sq" A plow 14" wide plowing 6" deep is 14x6=84sq" That is per bottom. A 3-16" plow 8" deep would have 128 sq in x 3= 384 sq in. A 4-14" plow 8" deep would have 112 sq in x 4 = 448 sq in. 3-16" 6" deep 228 sq in x 10# of pull = 2280# required 3 16" 8" deep
384 sq in X 10# of pull = 3840# required. 4-14" 6" deep 336 sq in x 10# of pull = 3360# required. 4 14" 8" deep
448 sq in x 10# fo pull + 4480# reqiured. A 620/630 pulled 4358# IN 3TH gear and 3471# in 4Th gear

In the old days, everybody plowed 6" deep. Today most guys plow 8" deep

3Th gear is 3.41 mph 4th gear is 4.38 mph With in feet x speed x 80% (20% turning.) 3-16"= 4' x 4.38 = 17.52 acres per 10 hr day x 80% = 14.01 acres per 10 hours divied by 10 = 1.4 acres per hour.

We quit plowing in 1985 as we now just dig and disc. We have plowed with our 630 pulling 3-16 F-145 semi mount plow. But from 1979 to 1985 we plowed the 3-16"'s with a 730D. 630 O.K. 730D much better. We have red clay hills

Mike-----

I'm with you all the way on your figures. Makes sense. Where did you get your data for lbs of pull (i.e. 4358 lbs pull in 3rd gear for the 630)? I'd be interested in plugging in figures for the "70".

Thanks

Neb tests on the tractor. One of my old text books from the UofWisc on the rest of the figures.

NOTICE ON HOW MUCH EXTRA PULL IS NEEDED FOR THE DIFFERANCE BETWEEN 6" AND 8".

70gas 1sr gear 5453# of pull @ 2.18 MPH 2nd gear 4467# of pull @ 3.34 MPH 3th gear 3318# of pull @ 4.50 MPH 4th gear 2318# of pull @ 6.53 MPH 5th gear 1576# of pull @ 8.98 MPH 6th gear 1031# of pull @ 12.88 MPH

70D 1st gear 6189# of pull @ 2.19 MPH 2nd gear 4941# of pull @ 3.38 MPH 3th gear 3687# of pull @ 4.53 MPH 4th gear 2589# of pull @ 6.53 MPH 5th gear 1840# of pull @ 8.98 MPH 6th gear 1243# of pull @ 12.88 MPH

Now you now way a 59 hp 730D was sold as a 5 plow tractor and a 80 hp 4010 was also sold as a 5 plow tractor.....2" deeper in plowing depth Amoung the many other things the Col of Ag started pushing in the late 1950's and early 1960's was to apply more fertilizer and to plow deeper to take the fertilizer deeper so as the deeper roots could take it up later in the season. And that is why they are pushing chisle plows as that takes the fertilizer deeper yet. So now we have pollouted ground water. Sometimes Iam not proud to be one of those college educated farmers. Maybe that is why we quit farming and went ranching.

Poor farm rd., I would find a 3-14, a 3-16 is quite a load, I plowed my garden and a buddy's garden with a 630 and a 3-16. She had all she wanted with fluid in 38 in. tires and 3 piece weight set on front. It was a light clay soil but hard and would bring the front end off when I raised the plow. My cousin thought that the 630 did better than his 3010 diesel did. Was a 3pt JD plow.

I pull 2-14 with my 620. I have mostly red clay. My 620 will pull it in 3rd and sometimes 4th gear in loamy soil. Get a 3 point hitch plow. Put the center link in hole No.2 or 3 on the load control yoke. No.1 hole is at the top least sensitive, No.4 is at the bottom, most sensitive.

In the book they say the 620 or 630 is a 4 14 inch plow tractor, but if you have red clay and hills like i have in NE Wisconsin, 2-14 is all the plow you want. I pull 3-16 with my 4020 Gas.It really
works in 3rd gear going up big hills.

I would say for conditions other than clay, you could use up to a 4 bottom plow but because of your clay, you might be better off using a 3 bottom. Also take into consideration, the plow bottom size when you make your decision.
