Could someone tell me a little bit about the 4560? What are the pros and cons with this tractor, what is the hp and what size engine is in it, what year were they built? Thanks Ted.

One thing I forgot to mention is that some of the early 4960 engines had problems with oil consumption. They would take a gallon of oil a day pulling the crap out of them or idling around. Was a poor ring/piston combination I think. I've seen a few 4960 with low hours and an overhaul listed when for sale. Don't know if this affected the 4560 or not. One customer had 2 4960's that both needed the overhaul. chris

I think those problems were confined to the 4960, as I haven't heard of them on the smaller tractors. I also believe that Deere picked up the tab on a lot, if not all of those tractors that had the problem with oil consumption. It was a problem with the pistons/rings. Another fairly common problem on the newer tractors (50 series or so on up) is the aluminum rear crank seal retainer. It doesn't grip the seal as tightly as the older cast iron units, and occasionally the seal will walk forward into it's bore, and then allow engine oil to get into the tranmission. I ended up doing about a $15,000 repair job on a 4960 that this happened on, because the customer ignored the engine oil pressure and stop engine lights. The tractor spun #4 rod bearing and wiped out the crank. I also did some work on the the transmission clutch pack and two-speed housing while the tractor was split. Anytime I have a tractor split, I always replace the rear main seal, and if the tractor has the aluminum retainer, I replace it also.

Dear freiend,

The 55 and 60 series tractors were one of the most reliable tractors John Deere built!! Ive worked at dealerships for 10 years, these tractor are proven. Its a shame they stoped building them! Now I work at Product Engineering Center John Deere. We oun a 4555 and it is a GREAT piece of machinery! The 4560 is around 160 horsepower but most of them run around 180 hp with no problem. The 7.6 liter engine is one of the most bullet proof engine Deere has made. If you have any questions please contact me.

Thanks for all the response on the 4560. The one that i'm looking at is a repo and is in like new condition, would never know it is 10 years old. It has good rubber all around [duals, front wheel drive] with weights. Now, what would something like this sell for at auction? I have no idea. Any help would be great. Thanks Ted.

The Deere 60 series tractors are good tractors in general, and the 4560 is an excellent tractor in itself. I believe the 4555 and the 4560 were the best selling tractors of those series. The 4560 is the smallest of the large-frame tractors. Horsepower rating is fairly low from the very reliable 6076T engine, so they last a long time. The transmission clutch pack, brake pack and rear differential assembly are the same units used in the 4760 and 4960, so you know they're going to last a long time. The electronic hitch is pretty trouble-free and eliminates all of the mechanical linkage in the hitch valve used on the 50 series tractors and before. People can say what they want about the electronics in newer tractors, but the fact is that they generally give far fewer problems than a lot of the mechanical setups that they replaced. It's much easier to replace a potentiometer or a switch than pull a rockshaft valve and rebuild it. The 15 spd powershift is also a very reliable unit. The 4560 would have to be a close second behind the 4440 as my favorite post New Generation tractor. I don't think you can go wrong with a 4560.

Ran one on a cotton farm for 3 years. Without a dout, one of the smoothest operating tractors I have ever driven (And I have driven a lot of them!). That one was a 2wd powershift with around 3000 hrs on it. Never gave us any trouble. I want a 4560 one day!

Great tractors, reliable too. They are still my favorite "newer" Deere tractors. Deserve to become classics one day! Anyone want to think about restoring an 8400 in about 40 years? Local Deere shop manager and parts expert got a good laugh about it one day! Just my 2 cents.
