I am restoring a 3020 gas. The Marvel USX21 carburator is shot. The low speed air screw threads in the carb body are chewed up, and the pressed-in pin that adjusts the accelarator pump diaphram is loose. I need to get a new or rebuilt carb. My dilema is that I have had mixed info on what carb to buy, either a zenith or another Marvel S. I have talked with a veteran JD mechanic who swears by the Marvel S. He says Zeniths suck. I am veteran auto mechanic, and viewed a zenith at local JD shop. The Zenith to me looks like a better design, in my opinion. Can some one with experience in this situation answer the following questions:
What carb is better?
Should I buy new or rebuilt?
Does the Zenith replacement fall right in, or do you have to buy/fabricate crap for it to fit?
Who out there can one buy a quality rebuit carb from, that has better prices than the JD dealer?

When I mean rebuilt, I mean all parts are within new factoy specifications.

Thanks DJW

Well I will give you my past 20 years + of John Deere dealer tech experience for what it is worth. 1st, neither one of these carburetors are any good if in need of repair. 2nd, they both run good when in shape. 3rd, they both wear out. 4th, the Marvel is more repairable than the Zenith when wore out. 5th, If I had the choice between a new or rebuilt one I would pay more for the new one no matter what brand it was. The Marvel got a bad rap and I believe due to that they were different. The old Zenith was common and people understood them better. Either way the guy fixing your carburetor has got to be smarter than the carburetor. The Zenith when worn will wear a bore out that the accelerator pump goes into and there is no fix for that other than replace the body / bowel of the carburetor. When worn in this area they will smoke and load up at an idle and all the kits in the world won't correct the worn cast iron body. The Marvel also has an accelerator pump and nozzle that too will fail and cause it to smoke, It is a replaceable rubber diaphragm. Problem with repairing both these carburetors is getting some of the parts for them. They both will interchange with each other with no modifying. Good Luck, Dave W

I haven't read too many praises for the Marvel carb. on this web site. You can do a search using "3020 carb" and find more info. about it. Also on the top of the Yesterday's Tractors page there's a carburetor link to a supplier of new and rebuilt carbs. My 3020 has a Zenith. It works good, but I needed to raise the float more than the spec. to leave more fuel in the bowl and get it running right. The JD dealer should be able to tell you if it will bolt right on if you don't have a parts manual. Internet address Link will let you register and lookup part numbers, prices, availability, and place orders from your local JD dealer. Good luck.
