I've got a 1953 model 50 that I just picked up today. I've got several items to sort out but there are initially two questions I have.

1. The battery is 12V "Positive Ground"? At least mine is...

2. After about 45 minutes the radiator boiled over. Temp indicated about 170 degrees (although the gauge could be wrong). There are basically two pipes running from the radiator to the engine block. The upper pipe (running to the top of the water tank) was quite hot. The lower pipe (running to the bottom of the tank) was not hot at all. This suggests to me that water is not flowing. I believe this to be the "shutter" type of regulator system and so there is no thermostat. I also believe that the radiator core is relativly new. If this is the case, what do you think the chances are that the culprit is a faulty water pump (pump spins okay but impeller might have slipped off)?

John: I have a 1956 50 and after a few minutes both top and bottom pipes are about the same temperature. Mine has a thermostat. I know for sure because I put it in. There is a small pipe coming off the side of my pump and goes to the top pipe just behind the radiator under the thermostat. This is the by pass pipe. It gets the same temperature as the upper and lower pipes as well. I hope this helps�. Gerry..

The shutter is probably stuck closed. See if there is a good blast of air behind the fan after the engine has warmed. The air blast should be strong and warm. Make sure the flutes in the grill are not clogged with debris.

Sounds possible. Start it up with the radiator cap off. Look in it and see if you have circulation. If you have the shutters, you will need to remove the grill section and see if it is openning. They have been known to stick and many have been removed and lost. My 60 is that way.

i'd look for bubbles in the coolant as soon as the engine is started also.
