First be sure the fuel is off, the carb bowl is empty. The last thing you want to do is have it start, or worse yet spray you with gas and then ignite it. Some people have been severely burned and killed by gas.

Now here is the procedure. Unscrew the left hand spark plug, ground it, and leave the plug wire connected. Rotate the magneto to the forward position. Then rotate the flywheel so that the LH Impulse mark on the flywheel lines up with the mark on the transmission case. This is top-dead center on the number 1 (left cylinder). Now rotate the magneto back (counter-clockwise) so that it just trips and sparks the left-side spark-plug. (this can hurt if you accidently get your hands over the wires so I would wear gloves. Set/tighten down the magneto. It is timed.

However, I then like to check my work so I rotate the flywheel another full turn and stop when the left side spark plugs sparks (it needs to be grounded). I then check to see how close I am to alignment of the marks. If I am on the mark. I call it good, if not I might adjust the magneto slightly to compensate. Forward a little if it is before the mark (underneath it), and back if it is after (over it). This has never happened to me, but I always check my first setting.

Just be sure the gas is out of the cylinder, or do not use the plug since spark and gas can kill.

Hope this helps.

By the way, the B has more comperssion due to headwork (nothing crazy), and a mild cam. Thanks.
