I have a 1978 John Deere Model 950 Tractor. I bought it two months ago and was in working condition. I only put it in gear a couple of times to move it about ten feet as I was reconditioning it. Now I cannot get it into gear, reverse or first. I get a grinding noise. How can this happen if I only moved it a couple of feet over the past two months? I added a brush hog to it and the PTO cannot be engaged either unless I disconnect the brush hog PTO connection.

Jerry, prvevious post is right. When you get running in gear depress clutch pedal and stomp on individual break pedals. This is how I unstuck clutches when I worked for a JD dealer back when those tractors were new. They were so prone to stick that when they came to dealer in a crate the pedals were tied down.Very good little tractors even though not built in good ole USA.Jim B

Jim - Is there a way to get a PTO clutch unstuck on a 950 without breaking the tractor apart? It does not have an access port in the bell housing. Mine has been stuck for at least 1 yr +.

Sounds like stuck clutches. Could be an adjustment, but the X50 tractors (and some others) are bad about clutches sticking. The clutch plates rust and stick to the pressure plate. I have a 1984 950 with a stuck PTO clutch. I have to kill the engine, engage the PTO, and restart the engine. A nuisance but it works. My drive clutch works ok. My manual says that if you leave the tractor sitting unused for a long time (time undefined) you should block the clutch down to prevent this. If it has only been stuck for a short time and if you can get the tractor started in gear, you might be able to depress the clutch and hit the brakes and see if it will break the clutch loose.
