I recently purchased a JD 1520 gasoline tractor equipped with a #48 loader. While I am pulling with the tractor and not using the loader the control valve is very hot. Should the control valve be getting hot if I am not using the loader? Do I have some internal issue with the valve? The bucket will drift down around 2" in about 10 minutes of running time. Any help will be appreciated.

The valve is an indepedent 2 spool greesen valve. The other functions of the hydralic system seems ok. Thanks for your help everyone. Now I have a much better feel for what is wrong.

I`m assuming your loader has a factory supplied independent control valve (two spool Gresen), not hooked into your remotes. If the valve is set up correctly (closed center plug installed) than your problem in all probability is a blown seal in the valve body. To identify an open or closed center valve--There is a 1-7/16 plug on the side of the valve. If that plug has small cuts on the points of the hex than its an open center valve. You will need Deere part # c-19645 [plug] and w-16399 [seal] because you have a closed center hydraulic system. If the correct plug is in it, pull it out and check the o-rings behind it. There is also a relief valve behind a plug on the control lever side of the valve also. Check those seals and the valve and seat behind for dirt or damage also. I cant see replacing a valve if all it needs are five dollars worth of seals.

I have the same loader , same valve on a 2020 . We bought the whole package new so nothing has been changed . I have had that o-ring fail a couple times since , you can hear oil bypassing through . Mine is hooked pressure side from a "tee" on the supply side under the right side foot rest and the return goes to the trans filter cover port . Everything is just as stated in above post . I was told that the valve is no longer available from Deere when I tried to get one for a loader for my 3020 , anybody know about this ?

A valve kit is available through whole goods.( you have to talk to a knowledgeable ag salesman, not a parts person)

I have a 1520 with a 48 loader. I initially had problems with the valve not completely closing in the center position. This took me a little while to figure out since at first I didn't realize that this tractor had a closed center hydraulic system.

One way to test this is to run your buck all the way to one end and listen to the engine. When it hits the maximum point your engine will run easier. Then release the valve and the engine should sound the same. If you hear it load down more it means that the valve is not completely closing in the center and is letting some fluid circulate. I ended up replacing my valve. Hope this helps.

Luke,an internal hyd. leak in loader valve or tractor can cause oil to heat.Do other hyd. functions on tractor work good.Loader would have to drop faster for heat to be created in it unless there is a relief valve in loader valve that is leaking.I don't think the factory valve had a relief valve but valve could have been changed.I have seen converta-valves(by changing a plug change them from open center to closed center) blow an o-ring but this also affects other hyd functions.Jim B

Hey LUke,
Bought a 4020 a couple months ago with a 48 loader on it. Mine does the same thing except it drifts up. My thoughts are that the valve needs to be gone through and be rebuilt. Its leaking oil around the o-rings and causing to raise up. At least thats what it appears too me. Of course you may find someone who may differ from that idea.

The valve to spool is a machined fit, the o-rings only seal the spools to outside leakage. You will have to replace the valve assembly.
