JD 1520 differential lock

When I press my differential lock foot pedal on my JD 1520 it seems to stick down into the lock position. There is a lever over top of the pedal with a gear symbol with an arrow over it and a gear symbol with a [ over it. What does this lever do? Please contact me by e-mail. Thanks

when everything is ok, the pedal should jump back to the disengage position by spring force as soon as the traction between the drive wheels equalizes. you even have to leave your foot on the pedal if you want contineous lock.
there is a common problem of the diff lock shaft (the one that is keyd to the pedal)seizing to the housing with rust. in many cases, the pedal force is enough to engage the lock but spring force is not enough to disengage. you can try to improve things by applying a lot of penetrating oil to where the shaft entrers the housing and working the pedal many times until it is free enough for the spring force to return the pedal to the disengaged position.
the lever you describe is the pto engaging lever.

That lever, if memory serves, is your park brake.
The German built tractors have a mechanical differential lock, and should not be engaged with the wheel spinning, and do not automatically release like the hydraulically actuated ones.

Bob, with all due respect... all your statements are incorrect.

Kelly, dave val has the information you need.

I can only add that sometimes you have to "finesse" the engagement-pedal with your heel pressure, while the drive wheel is turning slowly (usually slipping). Stomping hard on this pedal is, eventually, going to result in a big smile on the face of your local JD Parts guy!
