I purchased a new (load?) needle for a Dltx 82 70 JD carb. For some reason, it will screw in 2 complete turns and bottom out. The old one will screw in twice as far before bottoming out. Does this sound normal, is it because of wear on the old needle? I assume its called the load needle (inside the bowl nut).

Ricky, that is the metering valve or metering screw. The old needle could have had a damaged end on it or the new valve could have incorrect or different position threads on it. Put the valves side by side & compare the length from threads to ends & bushing shape. Did the old screw leave the bushing in the carb when removed?
~It wouldn't hurt to call the place you got it from to verify it is the correct screw.
~Don't force that valve into the seat as damage will be possible.

I am curious to why you thought you needed a new load needle. Did the little floating part(tip of needle) come off???The last I checked they were a little pricey $50++. They are very delicate. Examine the old and new to see if there is a difference.I would get a micrometer and measure the floater. SEAMO
