Carb Idling Settings

I've got a 1939 John Deere with a DLTX71 carb and I can't seem to be able to get it to idle at a reasonably slow speed. I think the magneto and timing are OK as the impulse clicks pretty close to where it should. However, I can see that the magneto is turned as far in one direction as possible. There are (2) small holes in the carb that I believe should feed the gas in when idling, but it seems that air can come through a hole that comes through the body all the way from the choke area. Anybody got any ideas? I don't think it's getting the fuel it wants.

Thank you.

Leroy, if those holes are in the side of the throttle bore at the throttle plate area they feed a mixture of both air & fuel & act as both idle orifices & air bleeds.
~Make sure your throttle plate is centered & not worn on the ends & the shaft bushings aren't worn & are pushed in even with the inside of the bore if it doesn't have step type bushing bores. Any air that gets around the throttle plate on the ends doesn't mix with fuel worth a darn.
~It wouldn't hurt to check the running timing as there is some concern due to the mag position..
