I have a 1966 3020 diesel, recently bought. I notice on one side of the engine/ only/ front cylinder. looks like I may need? to replace headgasket. There is a black, more grease like than oil...sort of slowly oozing once the motor gets to operating temperature. There is not a lot of the gunk...but the other cylinders are clear, no leakage. How important is it that I replace the headgasket...I have plenty of power ~ but I don't know if its my imagination...seems like I can "hear" that leak. Any comments appreciated.

If it is on the exhaust side of the engine it may be condensation and exhaust sludge leaking from the front exhaust port. See if the exhaust manifold bolts are loose or the gasket is bad on the #1 cylinder. The condensation can run down to the head gasket area and start to bubble as the engine warms up.

If it's not leaking oil into the coolant, coolant into the oil, coolant into the cylinders or compression into the cooling system, you can probably get by for a long time. Deere 6466 engines (used in the 40 series up to the 50 series) engines tend to leak oil out the back of the head gasket, and they'll run for years with no other problems.

I was surprised to find the exhaust manifold bolts on that cylinder were not really tight. I tightened them...end of sludge problem. Its comforting to associate with true genuis ~
