My teen age son and I are restoring a very late in the model year '49 JD B. (has square axle housing). It has a cover (sheild) over the back of the clutch/belt wheel, and the casting it attaches to has three mounting points with holes drilled and tapped for the mounting bolts. Now, when I was growing up, we had a '47 B with no cover. Did the earlier models have mounting points for the cover, even if they came with no cover? I don't remember! Also, the cover is no stranger to a welder, having cracked more than once, and the mounting tabs look like they've been replaced by washers welded on. Is this cover a weak spot due to vibrations or something?

RayP,
My '47 B doesn't have the shield. When I get home I'll check and see if the mounting holes are there. I never paid any attention. I'll post what I find.

B Serial # 202310 has the holes with painted over bolts and lock washers, but no shield. Never been there as far as I know, but '47 was a long time ago!

I remember having to be very careful when driving into the manure loader, and also when mounting the 226 mounted corn picker, that I didn't step on the chat shield...!!! I wonder how many late "B"'s were used in those mounted corn pickers.....!!!

Hi Ray, I believe the shield you are talking about was introduced on the later tractors. On my tractors, the 49's are the earliest models that have them. Its not unusual to see them welded.

Just check the parts C/D & it show's this guard after s/n 201000? I personally haven't seen one on any tractors prior to the cyclone model. But have found there's alot I haven't saw?? The number B3124R. I know I have owned 48,49,50 B's & they all had them. My 50 model was the only one that hadn't been repaired or welded. RLA
