Just curious what keeps the rings from possibly turning to a point where the gaps line up and blow-by would occur?

Serendipity. I am not sure I spelled that right. I asked my Dad that same question when I was a kid. He didn't answer. When the rings are new and the cylinders are tight, there is very little end gap to worry about even if they do line up. when they are worn, there is still just some end gap. they do leak by due to wear and cylinders sometimes get out of round. that is probably where a lot of the compression goes when the engine is worn. If they start out misaligned, there is no reason they shouldn't stay that way. If they move, maybe they will all move together, or keep moving and when they line up, they will only be that way for a little while. A long answer for something that is nothing to lose sleep over, but my arthritis needed some excerise this morning.
