I have just replaced the pinion gear on the starter for the second time. The rebuild shop for the starter said that the flywheel gear may be bad (worn out). There are no teeth missing and nothing obviously wrong with the flywheel gear. Is there any way to check the gear to see if it worn out while still on the tractor?

Sounds like the repair shop may be giving you the wrong starter and/or pinion assembly. Happened to me once when replacing the original Delco starter on a 4020D with a Japanese version.

Take the timing cover off the flywheel housing and bar the engine over with a screwdriver, or have someone hold the clutch pedal down, with the fuel shut off, and the tractor in park and bump the starter over.

I can see the flywheel gear thru the starter hole and have turned the engine to see all the teeth. There are no teeth missing, but how do you know if the gear is worn too much and needs to be replaced? I don't want to split the tractor if the flywheel gear is good enough.
