I have been using the 48 B that I rebuilt the transmission. In fourth gear about half throttle
after using for awhile, can hear a rumbling/growling noise from transmission, and can feelit more in feet. Seems like if idling doesn't do it, wot can can hear it and feel it. If i rest my feet on the brakes can feel it, it's not really loud but noticable. Seem like tractor have to be used for about 30 minutes before it will start. 1st, 2nd, 3rd doesn't make it, haven't tried 5th or 6th. I installed all new bearing and races except for axles. I replaced the counter shaft ilder gear (old one was missing some teeth, to much noise to tell if it was doing it before), counter shaft, transmission input gear were also replaced, used parts for different transmissions. Used GL1-140 gear lube. Does have noise from first reduction gear area, same gears. Would the different gears cause this noise? Noticed that when turned to left with brake can feel it more.
It's hard to tell where it's coming from and if its transfering through something. Would a bearing set to tight or loose, or spins in case cause this? Thanks for any help.

JD Jack, it is almost impossible to switch gears from different trannies and keep from having noise. As a matter of fact you can visualy inspect the gear and due to wear patterns when meshed the gears will make noise. Wish I had an absolute solution but there isn't any.

You said you replaced the counter shaft idler gear did you use a jd part or an aftermarket? I replaced that gear with one from central tractor in a late model B once and the teeth were not machined right. It vibrated in gears 1,2 and 4 real bad. I had to tear it back down and find a JD part for it.

I too have a similar question. I did not break open the tranny on my '35 B, now that it is running, the transmission seems to make normal noise in 1 and 3, but a lot of noise in 2 and 4. I am only running 90 wt as I had not found the GL-140 locally. Now that JD Jack has givin that info, I plan to look for some and try that before breaking open the tranny.

My question is this, how much noise is normal in those ranges?
