Hi fellas,i've been interested in old tractors for years, and am finally able to get into it as a small hobby.Problem is i'm not sure exactly what kind to start with.I've located a 40 with trycycle frontend(i'm told these are the ones with single front wheel). The tin is in excellant shape, tires are real good, and seems to be in good running shape for an asking price of 2300.Does this seem like a reasonable price and tractor to start with or is there a more desirable model anyone would recomend? thanx for any help.Robert in North La.

I have a 1953 40T with 10,800 hrs on it and yes the hr. meter still works. My grandfather bought this tractor in early 53. I obtained it 5 yrs. ago and have been restoring it since. THE BOTTOM END HAS NEVER BEEN TAKING APART!!! Until now because I am in the process of replacing the rings because my compressing test came out low. Touch O Matic still works all lights, original amp. and temp gauge still works and the optional cig. lighter that my grandfather ordered with it still works. The only thing that is broke is the dash light. So I am a hard core 40's fan to say the least. I was offered $5500 for it 5 yrs. ago when I brought it home but this little JD has more sentimental value then anything. Good Luck with your choice.

Robert,

For a good running model 40T with a working touch-O-matic three point $2300.00 is a good price as far as I am concerned. I paid $2700.00 last spring for the wide front "T" I now have. I have two model 40 tractors and both are good workers although I do prefer my 40 Utility for working around my place and use it at least twice as often as the "T".

These are good little tractors and if taken care of they will still do a lot of work.

Jeff

Make sure that the 3 point operates properly.
