I've got a 38 B and have gone through it one end to the other. The block and head have been rebuilt, the governor checked out, it has a professionally rebuilt mag and carb, and I've left no stone unturned or spared any expense to get it right. But no matter what I do, I can't get it to idle or run smoothly. It spits and sputters at idle and mid-range speeds, but somewhat smooths out and handles a load just fine at high RPM. The load and idle adjustments on the carb have no effect unless you screw them all the way in and then it tries to die. I've tried readjusting the timing by moving the mag and that doesn't help either. It'll generally start with a few rotations, but tends to flood easily. I read recently in Two-Cylinder Magazine that the correct carburetor for my 38 B is the DLTX-10. I checked it and it's got a DLTX-34 installed. Could this be my problem? I've got a 44 B with a DLTX-34 and it's the smoothest running tractor you've ever heard or seen. I'm no ace two-cylinder mechanic by any stretch and have reached the limits of my knowledge. I'd sure appreciate your input. Thanks.

Unstyled tractors tend to run rough. If you put aluminum pistons in it this will make it jump a little more and shake. My John Deere A (1936) runs really rough but I pull in antique tractor pulls. When I get pulling it really straigtens up and goes. As far as your 1944 running smoother, this is because it has a different head on it with different valves. The Unstyleds just aren't the smoothest running machines. The DLTX 34 is better than the DLTX 10. I have a DLTX 53 on my A and it is supposed to have a DLTX 18. I rebuilt both carbs and this makes this one run smoother but still not 100% like a later model. Just my 2 Cents.

What of spark plugs are you using? I made a big change in how my 38 B idles when I switched to deeper plugs. The " one size fits all" plugs I got from my JD dealer only extended a little more than halfway down to the cylinder bore. I finally got some champion W89D's, made a big difference. I still think you will need to switch to a DLX10 to get the best idle.

Your 38 has a different head. I notice most of the unstyled tractors run rough. But under load they run great. Deere 2 cylinders where meant to run at a full speed RPM. Not idle and putt along. Your 44 runs better because of the better designed head. The DLTX34 carb is for 41-47 B's You will never get your 38 to run as good as your 44.

Make sure your points are set on .015, and your valve gap is .020. I had a mag rebuilt, everything was replaced and the overall work was very good, but he must have forgotten to check the point gap (it was .020 or better).

Kelly, you might try switching the DLTX-34 carbs on your 2 tractors to see if the problem moves with the carb or stays with the tractor. Good luck.
