Can someone give me the formula to calcuate the cubic inches of a engine?

Leon has nailed it for you. Those of us who spend a lot of time figuring the volume of circular containers know that a square multiplied by .7854 becomes a circle. So taking Leon's lead here, the bare formula is : Bore X Bore X .7854 X Stroke = the number of cubic inches in ONE cylinder. Then multiply by the number of jugs that the engine has. You need to express everything decimally of course, like 3.875 not 3-7/8 ..... Dave

pi r squared, times stroke, times number of cylenteres. or

1/2 bore, squared, times 3.1416 times stroke times number of cylenders

Kemper, if you know the bore and stroke heres how you do it. The volume of a cylinder in cubic inches is equal to the area times the height, so its Pi (3.1416) x Radius (1/2 of bore) squared x height x number of cylinders. Pi x R x R x Stroke x Cylinder No. So if the bore were 4 and the stroke 6 and you had 2 cylinders, the Cubic Inch is 3.1416 x 2 x 2 x 6 x 2 Cylinders. Clear as mud????? Ol John T Nordhoff in Indiana

Contact me by e-mail and I can help you. I'll need to know the bore, stroke and number of cylinders. It's easier for me to tell you the CID than to explain how to calculate it.

Maybe someone else on here can explain things simpler than I can, but I do have a little Lotus spreadsheet set up to instantly calculate CID, so it's easy to give you your answer.

In inches, multiply the bore by itself, then multiply by 0.7854, then multiply by the stroke, then multiply by the number of cylinders. For example a two cylinder engine with 4" bore and 5" stroke: 4 X 4 X 0.7854 X 5 X 2 =125.664 cu in.
