I recently purchased a 5020, and it seams hard to get into the proper gear, the shift selector either goes past the selected gear or into another. The selector is not stiff, When it finally gets into gear it is ok. Is this a common problem with older JD's? I think it is a 1968, or 1969. Any help will be appreciated. Stan

Stan, sounds like the gear shift lever components on the dash are worn. Never had a 5020, but have put untold hours using and working on 4020s....I usually just take everything apart and build up (weld) the worn parts on the lever and the shift gates. If it's real bad, you might want to replace the bronze bushings on the pivot shaft.

Stan the 5020 and 6030 alway shifted a little harder then the 3020 and 4020.Grease all the linkages under the dash and check at the trans end of linkage for mud or other obstructions. These big tractors sit most of the time so things tend to get frozen or hard to move.Had a ford 9600 did the same thing it wasn't the linkage the lever coming out of the trans was partially froze up.Took the linkage off oil and greased the lever worked it back and forth till it moved freely replace linkage.bam farmin again
