Will I damage my 6 volt tractors if I boost them with a 12 volt booster? If I will, how do I modify my booster to be 6 volt? Thanks!

Paul, I have seen more than one 6 volt battery explode when those high amperage heavy duty gas powered boosters were used for starting. A short application probably wont hurt the coil or points, but try and make and especially break the connections other than right at the battery top where escaping gas is explosive. If you just have a medium duty charger that has the 12 volt boost option, thats not as dangerous (was talking about the gas powered starter/chargers before) but still try and avoid sparks (connecting and disconnecting) near the battery top. If the 6 volt system has heavy duty high amp hour batterys and 00 Gauge starter and ground cables and is in top condition, she should start without a boost. Good Luck Ol John T in Indiana

Paul, I've done it but don't recommend it. I definitely don't recommend it on a pony start diesel as the coils on the pony are very expensive & 12 volts can damage them in a hurry. It won't hurt the 6 volt starter or coil for short jumps but can cause the 6 volt battery to explode under the right conditions. If you disconnect one cable from the 6 volt battery then jump to that cable & the one still on the battery it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks guys! I have four of these 6 volt tractors that sit in the storage building a lot and my batteries sometimes run down from lack of use. I would love to be able to use my 12 volt jumpstarter but I see that this is not recommended for safety reasons.
My booster has a 110 volt inverter built in so perhaps I can plug in my 6 volt charger and get enough power to start 6 volt tractors that way!?
I'll let you know.
Thanks,Paul
