I'M LOOKING AT A 4630 WITH A POWERSHIFT TRANNY THAT THEY SAY IS SLIPPING IN THE FIRST FOUR GEARS. HOW MANY GEARS DOES IT HAVE? ABOUT WHAT WOULD IT COST TO FIX THIS,PARTS AND LABOR?

The 8 speed powershift is a pretty solid transmission. The later 15 speed is basically the same, with a hydraulically actuated two speed to achieve more gears, and the clutch pack mounted on the flywheel, rather than in the front of the trans. More than likely, if it's slipping in the first four gears, it either has a problem with clutch pressures in those gears, or a portion of the clutch pack in the front of the transmission is slipping. The transmission pump is also part of the clutch pack, so if there is a lot of damage, you're usually best off to replace the entire clutch pack, rather than piece it out. The PTO clutch is contained in the same assembly as well. A new clutch pack is probably in the $4000 range from Deere, rebuilts from Abilene Machine and the like are usually much cheaper. The tractor has to be split to work on it. It could be just a pressure problem, but if they have been slipping it excessively, it will probably require clutch pack work as well. There is also a torsional damper on the flywheel that can slip, but that will tend to happen in the higher gears, just like a slipping clutch in a car.

You could get the 4630 with Syncro-Range, it has 8 forward and 2 reverse.
Power Shift, it has 8 forward and 4 reverse.
Quad Range, it has 16 forward and 6 reverse.
The John Deere Power Shift is a vary good transmission. They are expensive to fix.
In your case i would talk to a good John Deere dealer, because it could be something simple or really bad.

I think the transmission you're referring to is the quad range, which has 16 gears. A,B,C and D range plus a separate 1,2,3 and 4 shifter. By saying it slips in first four gears I would assume the A range gears, which means it's in that "A" range drive, just what I would think anyway. I don't think the 30 series was available with the 15 speed powershift like in the 50/55/60 series. I'm sure someone will know if I'm on the right track.

I am looking at a JD Brochure from 1975 that shows the 4630 came available with Power Shift, Quad Range and Syncro-Range

The Power Shift had 8 forward gears.

If that helps.
