Johnathon, this is from Green Mag June 1991, but it matchs my JD book to.
1st you need to establish True TDC, as I found on my D it was 1" off the mark so had been runing timing way to fast.
On your G,13000, up,
intake open--5 degrees - BTDC
intake close-55 degrees- ABDC
Exhaust-open-45 degrees- BBDC
Exhaust-close-10 degrees-ATDC
As I have learned head work needs to be checked, after 3 years fighting a goofy acting #2 cyl it was the intake valve not seating good, head work done by a very highly recommened shop.
Another D my friend paid dearly for a valve job and then couldnt get it started, I found #1 exhaust valve had a shoulder on it and was hitting the valve guide,(holding it open) all this should have been found before they ever left the shop.
This is why I questioned the valves seating.
I have just been taught a very good lesson on how to check out the valve job, pour solvent in the ports, if they leak, need to do some more lapping, in your case a good air test is what I would do, if the valve timing checks OK, that air test will tell you where your problem lies real quick.
Hope this gives you some help, Bob

Jonathon I don't have it with me but will give it tonight if no one else has by then.
Are you sure you don't have a leaking intake valve? Just was there and thanks to a real expert on valves we got mine cured. Was spitting back though the carb too. And it sure could be what Buick&Deere said also.

At how many thou lift are you measuring duration at? Too tight lash will cause popping back as well. Setting lash with a feeler gauge doesn't work on worn valves and rocker arms however.
