Last week I posted a question about my 39 H. I just got it started for the first time since I've owned it. I have a bad oil leak from the plate on the left side of the governor. My original plan was to take the plate off and apply some gasket sealer and stick it back together. Like most of my plans, they've been changed. I took the plate off and the gasket was in about 5 pieces. Looks like I need to replace it. I know this gasket is used to adjust the bearing clearance. The parts book doesn't tell the thickness of the gaskets. Just a thick one and a thin one. I ordered a thick one and 2 thins. Now, here's the question. How critical is the thickness? I measured the old one ( actually looked like 2 stuck together) and it measures .044. Stacking the 3 new ones gives me .040. The thin ones are .005 thick. Should I get another gasket? Thanks in advance

Frank, I would add another .005" as they will compress a little when the cover is tightened. ~The thickness is fairly critical if you want to get the gear position back where it was. The problem is you really don't know if it was right or not before you started. To do it correctly the governor should be removed & the heel positions matched. [.005" won't make that much difference though]

Thanks Clooney. I appreciate the quick response. I was under the impression that the gasket on the front of the governor controlled the gear lash. I thought the one on the side just adjusted the bearing clearance. After studying the parts book and the I&T manual I see what you mean. Well I guess I won't put it back together tomorrow after all. Got to order more gaskets Monday. Thanks again
