Ok. I have a 1940 H and the shifter is loose. When i try to shift it will pull right out (not all the way unless i take the gear pattern cover off) If i push down when i shift it works which is why i push down when i shift. I took off the 4 four bolts and took the cover off. What might be the problem? Am i missing a piece. i have not recieved my parts book yet. It may be a week or so. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Also, check the socket, part H718R. They can get worn out and allow the shift lever to come out of the shifters. Holding it down like you are doing helps if the socket is worn out.

37G, it sounds like the lower snap ring came out of it's groove or is missing. ~The "H" has, [I believe] a snap ring under the shift fulcrum ball then a spring with 2 flat washers above the little stamped shift cover with a snap ring above that. Make sure the snap rings are in the grooves in the shift lever above & below the shift cover....

Clooney is exactly right. I have had mine apart 3 times in the past year because the bottom snap ring was coming off. The last time, we ended up welding a bead around the shaft and then machining it down to the proper diameter and re-cut the groove. So far, it seems to be holding well. It was very embarrassing to have it come apart right after the 4th of July parade...
