I have a 1955 70 gas. You can screw in the load screw until it bottoms out and the tractor still blows a lot of black smoke when you goose the throttle. It will also miss as if its getting too much fuel. THe idle screws seem to be set properly (the tractor will idle perfectly) Also if you put it under a very hard load it will black smoke and look like a diesel with some knocking and pinging happening, and the tractor seems to not lugging as well as it should. I have pretty well covered the ignition, just need some fresh ideas.

"THe idle screws seem to be set properly (the tractor will idle perfectly"_____Do you still think it is the float? How could it let in too much fuel and still idle good?

Jon, not so sure about smarter?
~I'm guessing you have the DLTX duplex carb, if not disregard the following & post back.
~First, make SURE the choke is actually opening all the way, those spring type chokes have a habit of malfunctioning & not opening all the way even though the lever looks like it is in the correct place. ~If the choke is in fact opening all the way, then suspect a plugged intake system like a plugged air snorkel or plugged inner screen mesh in the air cleaner can. Try running it without the air cleaner hooked up to see if that helps.
~If disconnecting the air cleaner doesn't show an improvement you more than likely have a carb problem. Start by setting the float level & cleaning the little holes in the sides of the main nozzles, if that doesn't help you will have to dig deeper & possibly look at the main nozzle air bleed passage for a restriction. ~As a side note, the load adjusting needle on the DLTX duplex is more or less a load tuning needle & not an actual load screw. Most of the fuel going to the main nozzles doesn't pass through the load tuning needle & instead passes through internal fixed size jets & passages..... .

Jon----- -Check the float to see if it is heavy-could be full of fuel, causing the float to sink and let to much fuel into the carb,or possible debris stuck in the needle and seat. Good luck.
