I have a 46 B that a neighbor charged the magneto for me. Before he charged the Magneto the tractor fouled plugs and would not run. After the neigbhor charged the Magneto, the tractor ran great. Now the tractor is running like before (fouling plugs, running on one cylinder); the neighbor left me use a winco type X while he charged mine. Tractor ran great with the type X magneto.

So I know I have a magneto problem. What needs to be replaced on the type C magneto. My neighbor could tell me, I've just been too busy chopping silage to drop off the magneto again. I'm just curious as to what needs to fixed. The charge lasted about two days before the B started fouling plugs and running on one cylinder again.

The Wico C seems to get wear in the bushings(part #2495) and this allows the rotor to wobble around. This will give you inconsistent timing and spark. I have a couple that are pretty loose but they seem to run OK on tractors. The Wico X is a much better mag, but the C is the correct one for a lot of tractors. If I was concerned about it, I'd try new bushings before changing the mag. LOL, Paul

I do a lot of mag repair. I am curious as to what your neighbor used to charge your mag.If it is charged properly it last. It does not come and go.He had to completly take it apart to do it right.

Seamo, I'd like to send out a couple of C&X mag rotors(to a local fellow that repairs stationary eng mags.) for a little "electron shock therapy" any tips, pointers and how do recharge to correct polarity. Thanks gwh

Paul is right on with installing new bushings on the "C" and also check the armature shaft to see if it has come loose if you get one together and the edge gap is way off either the shaft has slipped or the breaker cam is worn to bad to be set at the .015 point gap. The point pin on the "X" series gets worn real bad and the points want to shift around instead of opening. You have to get the points to break at the proper edge gap or you will miss the hottest point of the mags .I hope I haven't confused you. E-mail if you need more info. Earl

Had the same problem on my 39 A.
Would run for 10 minutes or so and start skipping.
Bought the hottest plugs I could find, in my case this was Champion D23. Never had the problem again.

Dean, it's possible you don't have a magneto problem [again].
~Take an old spark plug & open the gap to 1/4" then install it in one plug wire at a time & lay on the block & turn the engine over. If you are getting a nice BLUE spark that jumps that 1/4" gap [repeatedly] your mag is good & you have other problems like fouled plugs, low compression or carb problems.
~If the spark is yellow, weak looking, or won't jump that gap multiple times in a row, suspect the mag, or bad plug wires. ~If the mag is the problem, start by looking at the brass clip that runs between the inner cap & coil contact button [wico C only]. If that clip is bent & not making contact with the coil button the spark will be weak & the mag won't perform very good [especially under load], [use lipstick on the button to check for clip contact, your choice of colors]. If the clip is touching the coil button then suspect rust on the coil core iron bar, poor wire connections, or weak coil, or points/condenser problems..

Dean, it is possible for any magneto rotor to loose some magnetic flux strength through the years, but the process of remagentizing them usually last for several more years. I always suspect the points first then cap, rotor, wires, plugs, condensor etc if the points are gapped proper and not corroded or pitted. Since a magneto doesnt have alot of excess spark energy to spare in the first place, if the tractor is burning oil or running too rich on gas, it doesnt take too long for one of the plugs to begin fouling (especially the right one) so if teh points are clean and gapped proper and the wires and cap are in good shape, check out compression and excess gas or oil consumption before you think the problem is definitely the mag. I use Autolite 388 plugs in styled tractors. Are the plugs flat sooty black (too rich) or shiny black uneven build up (oil burner) wehn you take them out??? Good Luck let us know Ol John T in Indiana

My mistake, the type C magneto worked for about ten minutes, not two days, after I had put it back on the tractor. The B then misfired and ran on one cylinder again.

The wico C is a poor magneto at best, Probably ok when new, but you see alot of these that are junkers, I would get an X model and find a deep ditch for the C.
