I recently purchased 1966 3020 synchro-range transmission. Test drive all okay. First day out brush cutting, she pops out of 3rd, then grinds if you try to go back in. stop, go to first, back to 3rd...she's okay again ~ for awhile. 2nd is mostly slow and 4th is too fast. Do I have to break the tractor to replace whatever is apparently worn out? If 3rd is shot, are others close to shot as well? or can I modify my expectations and just slow it out in 2nd forever. I don't like running a tractor where its nature is out of sink with itself. I mean I need my 3rd gear...

My 1966 4020 was having a similar problem. The shifting drum, lower shifter arms, and rods had quite a bit of wear.I rebuilt the shifter drum and replaced both shifter arms and rods. It cured all of my shifting problems. It is easy to shift now, no grinding or jumping out of gear. All of the parts were available at the dealer.

Gary, Thanks for your reply. sounds like you did this shifter work without breaking the tractor in two?

I did not have to go into the transmission for the repairs. The shifter drum comes out from the console as an assembly. Just remove the the shifter rods and the snap ring off the center shaft of the drum and push the shaft out. The shifter arms are located on the outside of the trans behind the battery box.If the holes in the arms or the shifter rods are worn they will need to be replaced. When installing the new shifter arms set the clearance to about .004. On some models there is a safety interlock switch behind one of the arms. If there is too much clearance it wont start. The job was easy to do. If you have any questions you can email me and I will help you if I can.

No you don't have to split the tractor to rebuild the shifter. Doing that is the first thing to try. If you get it rebuilt and adjusted and it still doesn't stay in gear then its the transmission. BUT its always a good idea to rebuild the shifter even if the transmission is the problem.
Good Luck!
