Engaging 3010 PTO

I did a search of the archives and did not find the answer I am looking for.

I have a 1963 3010D. When I push the clutch down and try and push the PTO lever forward, I get a strong resistance and can not get the lever to stay forward. At the point of resistance, the PTO will turn. I get the same results without pushing the clutch down. It has the 540 RPM stub installed.

I am hoping this is an adjustment and not a split the tractor fix. Can someone help me get this worked out?

Thanks. BigMac

Thanks for the replys everyone. I just bought the tractor in March and have tried engaging the clutch a few times over the last 6 months. This is a plow tractor so I have no real need for the PTO but I would like for it to work correctly.

I meet the resistance on the PTO lever after pushing it forward about 5 or 6 inches. There is no way I could get it "over the top" to have it stay engaged.

If adjusting the lever linkage does not work, it looks like I have to look inside. That is something I don't want to do. The normal clutch function works fine and is real strong as far as moving the tractor forward and back.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
BigMac

Mac, I have seen this problem before. What is happening is the "clutch assembly" does not have the correct mating plates in it. Go to a 3010 / 3020 parts book and you will learn that certain serial number tractor traction clutch plates have to be matched with the correct PTO clutch plate. When installed and matched correctly these two plates are back to back to each other and interlock when both the traction clutch is released and the PTO clutch is engaged. When mismatched the plates will not intertwine with each other rather but up and hit each other not allow enough room for each clutch system to operate. To sum up this explanation, split the tractor and get the correct parts put in it. You can put the newer parts / plates in your older tractor but both parts have to be changed. Not one old style part with one new style part. Good Luck, Dave W.

The lever is held in place by going "over center" when pushing the lever forward. If you take the sheet metal that goes around the steering console off, and remove the plate with your light switch and ignition key switch, you should be able to watch the action of the lever as you move it. It may be as simple as adjusting the rod that connects to the lever. It isn't fun adjusting the length of that rod, but it can be done...1/8th turn at a time if I recall correctly.

Have you just got this 3010D or did this just start happening??? If adjusting the lever (really the connecting rod) doesn't work, I'm guessing your going to have to split the tractor. The PTO clutch has springs that hold the PTO disengaged, where as the foot clutch has springs that hold the drive clutch engaged. So, when you engage the PTO, you are really trying to make it work against its "natural" state and is why it will disengage if you don't get the over center action.
