Hi, I have a 65 4020 and the steering box in the dash is leaking out by the steering wheel. I talked to a mechanic, and was told that it will start to leak when the valves and parts inside the box get worn. Is this true or would new seals fix the problem? I don't have any experience working in this area of the tractor, so I am not sure what to do. Should I take the steering assembly off and have it rebuilt, or buy a rebuilt or new one. How much work would go into this job, and how difficult would it be to do the job properly?
Also how much would parts, and possibly labor if i decide to have it done at a shop cost for this type of job.

Dave is right on here! It is a job for someone who has been around the block a few times. The valve adjustment is critical and takes special tools as Dave stated. My first one was an incredible learing experience as I had it in and out five times before I got it right. Experience teaches you to take your time and get right the first time. Eight hours for that job is pretty accurate. Try to cut that time and you're going to screw up! Good luck and be choosey about who you'll have work on it.

Jack, Allot of good and correct information here, the most incorrect is what your mechanic told you. The oil leak that you have is most likely due to a worn o-ring at the piston rod inside your valve and is putting a little to much pressure against the lip oil seals under the steering wheel. As suggested you can try and just replace the lip oil seals under the steering wheel but good chance it won't cure your problem. If the tractor steers good and all your concern is just that it leaks, You can put a seal kit in it without putting allot or any parts into it. Don't let anybody fool you as stated there are allot of parts in one of these and you might want someone familiar with it to work on it (including the right guy at the dealer). Not a job for the new trainee! I have probably done more than a hundred of these over the past twenty five years and I can remember two that I had problems with and guess what it was something that I missed on myself. No big thing that cannot be repaired you just want someone familiar with this valve to work on it. It does take a special adjusting fixture and a dial indicator to adjust. The four valve adjustments in it are only a few thousands of an inch difference in clearance!! If you were from Eastern Iowa I could fix you right up as I have all the tools to do so. If you take the tractor to a dealer expect the whole job to take about an 8 hour day. Parts will be less than a $100.00. Labor will bite you. Good Luck, Dave W.

Try replacing the seals under the steering wheel first. This seal is open to a small amount of return oil pressure all the time. If the valves were worn enough to cause the leak, you would be having more steering problems than the leak. There is a Oring on the steering piston shaft that could put too much oil up there, but then you would have more steering problems than the leak. There are two seals, two snap rings and two washers there. Replace it all. If that dosen't cure the problem you haven't lost much.

Hey Jack,
Got a 64 model 3020 thats giving me similar problems. Leak is between where the upper steering column bolts onto the lower part of the steering valve. I have not had enough ahead this year to fix her and its been a problem since it was needed in the hay field but the 4020 and the 135 Massey I have have been pulling the load. As for the steering column, I have heard horror stories on rebuilding them and of people getting arms broke when the steering wheel spun down quickly! I will probably just order a rebuilt one from Abiline Machine or somewhere and change out the whole deal when I do it. Hope this helps.
Gary

Jack, unless you are real mechanically inclined you should take it to a good mechanic. Those steering valves have a lot of parts inside and are tricky to set.If I remember correctly there is a seal between the tube that steering shaft is in below steering wheel and valve.Valve has to be disassembled to replace. There is a dust seal just below steering wheel but replacing it won't stop oil.Valve is not fun to R&R so you would want it fixed right.Small valves inside need to be adjusted with a dial indicator.Tech man.would be needed.Jim B
