If John Deere`s are that good, why are there so many for sale in the photo ad section?

Sell "green" to get "green."

So many? So few! There aren't enough old John Deeres for sale.

If there were more for sale, the prices would drop -- and you could pick up an old JD for as little as you'd expect to pay for an old IH, Allis, Case, etc.

Please go out and restore bunches of old JD's to add to the supply, so there will be more reasonable prices for old JD's.

If you think free markets don't work like that, do some farming and watch grain and livestock prices go up and down as supply and demand changes.

John,

It is really a matter of supply and demand but it is actually more complicated than that. The number of green tractors for sale is directly proportional to the number of wives making men sell their green because they actually told their wives how many green tractors they have. The key is to never let anyone know how many tractors you have. Then you can just keep on buying. Some men, early on, make the mistake of telling there wives or setting their green iron out in the open where it can be seen and counted, hence they are made to sell some or all of their green tractors.

PS, I cannot imagine ever selling my 4020.

Seems like I heard that advice from somewhere else!! Best advice I ever got from Roger Welsh and his infinite wisdom on dodging the Mrs. and keeping all my treasures hidden away in the barn!

Time to add my 2 cents? Why are so many for sale? For me its the love of green, I have just so much room & just so much money. If we can restore as many as we possibly then they will live on & on. I perfer to use them, work them, some prefer to show them, whats the differance? Some we like more than others, so in our eye's some are better than other models within the Deere line. In most cases its not real profitable, but we do it anyway. With just a little care, most of these machines will out last me, easy.

There are more John Deeres because of parts availability. Who wants something you cant get parts for.

Sure now you'll say i can get parts from here or there. Well us John Deere guys can get parts from John Deere and lots and lots of others.

Deere must be spending all their time making parts for the 40 year old tractors. It takes the 5 area JD dealers two weeks to get parts for my 5 yr old JD. Can service the old but screw the new customers, that's customer service & satisfaction!

That's not Deere's service you're receiving, it your dealer's service that you're receiving. Unless a part is backordered, there is no reason that it shouldn't be there in two days, and the next day in most cases. It sounds like your dealer is waiting and putting the parts you order on their stock order, to save of freight costs of a daily order. I suggest you ask the dealer why that is, or find a different one. Deere's part system is second to none in the agricultural field, and probably a close second to Caterpillar overall, as Cat has an incredible parts system.

I was just visiting here from the IH forum, but you must be lost. Try Yahoo games to meet some of your peers.

I have twenty-eight IH's and three JD's. I far prefer an old Farmall but all the tractors designed in the late '30's were good, from Allis Chalmers to W-9's.

In the '20's and into the '30's the emphasis was on reliability and that reached a peak about 1937 with the design of products ranging from the Cadillac V-16 and the Deusenburg to Farmall M's and H's. From the '40's on the emphasis has been larger and cheaper, hence less weight, so few of the newer tractors measure up to those from the late '30's and '40's.

Because of the superior quality and durability of John deere tractors more have survived the scrap heap and junk jards. As in Nature it has been the survival of the fittest.

Don't get me wrong, I love John Deeres and all but I am only 15 years old. I cant afford a tractor that costs 2000 or more dollars. I now own a 1930 Case C. I am in the process of restoring it. That tractor cost me $500 dollars! Why is it that John Deeres cant cost that? After all only working a couple times a week for 2 to 3 hours at a time doesn't get the money I need for a big green machine.

Hi Doug, I bought my 1940 A last Oct for $600, it had a rebuilt carb and other spare parts with it, and also sat for 7 years not running. We put the carb back on and some fresh gas in the tank, pulled her 30 yards and she popped off and ran. now with new rubber and paint, a few adjustments and assorted parts, she looks and runs exellent. It took about $2500 total to get her were she is. shes not show quality, but looks real good. Keep looking you'll find one, It took me 3 years to get the one I got, but I kept my eyes on it and finally got it. good luck! Ron

Doug, if you want to get a good deal on a JD, you can. You're going to have to do some looking and be patient, but there are good deals to be found. I recently heard of an "A" that a gentleman has or had. It ran but had a knock to it, otherwise it was complete and in decent shape. He wanted $250 for it. Obviously that would have been a good deal for the right person. I gave $650 for my '48 "G". It was cobbled together in places, missing the starter and mag, and generally kind of rough, but I found it less than four miles from where I live. I did have it running before disassebly, and aside from a few bad parts, it's in relatively good shape. But, I wanted a "G" for several years before I found one in the condition I wanted, as I wanted to take it all apart. I also didn't want to have to break the bank to buy the thing, so it worked out real well. I didn't even try to talk the guy down, as I knew it was a good deal. Obviously you're not going to find many decent "G"s for that money, but if you're looking for an "A" or "B", you can still find them for less than $1000 in running condition. Now that you have one tractor to tinker with - and I assume you wanted a tractor really bad - you can keep looking. I'm betting that in time you will find a Deere in your price range - patience is the key.
