2040 Neutral Start Switch Circuit Problems?

When I turn the key on my 2040 to the start position, I get only a beeping sound. Both range and gear levers are in the neutral position. I am able to start the tractor by putting the key in the on position and using a remote starter switch.

I think I have a problem somewhere in the neutral start switch circuit. Any suggestions for narrowing down the cause and fixing it, or do you suspect something else?

I've never worked on the neutral start circuit.

Remove the plastic cover on top of the trans.(around the gear shift levers) The neutral switch is under the cover, screwed into the top of the trans. Make sure you have current going to it when the key is in the start position and trans is in park. Clean the connections on the switch and the connector. After cleaning the connections, you should have current going in and coming out of the switch (in the start position) if not the switch is bad.
