I have a 37 B which is a pretty nice straight tractor, it was locked up when we began to restore it. Once we had it running we discovered the tranny makes an really bad noise which sounds like a rouph bearing.

It only does it when the clutch is engaged and when pulling, it is noisy in both ranges. We tore down the tranny and replaced all the bearings. (countershaft, sliding shaft, pully bearings, diffbearings the whole shebang. We found some pretty rouph bearing in there an thought we had the problem fixed. But when done it sounds just like it did before "!@#$%^&*" (only a bit quieter). Still makes the same sound.

You can feel the vibration in the deck plate on the right side when pulling a hill. What did we miss ?????

Ive got a 36 B its a nice little tractor it makes a bit gear noise in high range except when it is working. if you go up a hill dosent make any noise at all. i was told it was how the gears were cut that they were cut strait instead of at an angle like the later 2 poppers. I think from my experience anyway that thats the case because my grandpas G dosent make any gear noise its a 1950 model year. hope this helps

Jon, how loose is the pulley outer bearing on the crankshaft? You probably have worn gears and or loose bearing bores in the trans case or 1st reduction cover. If the gears are lose on the sliding shaft due to worn sliding gear shaft or gear spline wear they will be noisy also.
~If the gear crown is worn flat the gears will be noisy.
~If the bearing bores are good you might try heavier 140 weight GL-1 gear oil as that will cushion the gear contact a little. ~Most of those old mid 30's Deere's have some gear noise.

I will have to try the 140 Weight oil. It may be gear noise, it just seems so loud. I have been around a lot of old tractors and most have noise but just not quite this bad. I can live with it but I want to make sure it is not something that will cause trouble down the road.

Jon, if you put new bearings in, & the bearing bores in the case & retainers are fairly tight, & the bearings werent damaged during installation, you are left with gear mesh, worn gear, or loose gear noise. Usually gear noise will change with the gear range & load applied but if loose or bad bearings leave a shaft loose or mis-aligned the noise will act the same as gear noise.
~Wear on the 1st reduction gear or clutch drive gear will be present in all ranges & usually changes drastically from load to coast & will usually sound worse in the higher gears. Heavy trans oil wont effect that gear set as they are bathed in engine oil & not trans fluid on the B. ~What weight engine oil are you using?

I am using 10W-30 in the crankcase and 90 in the tranny. From the discription you gave me of the worn F.R.G. or pulley gear it seems to fit the bill. When coasting down a hill the noise completely goes away but once the engine picks up the load again the noise comes back. The worse the load the worse the noise.

Might heavier engine oil in the first reduction gear cover help to cure the problem. I think the gear cover only holds 1/2 quart of oil. That does not seem like enouph to hide the noise of noisy gears. But I can give it a try. Any other ideas?? Like I said I can live with "some noise" but what I have now is just way to much.
