Flywheel Ring Gear Grinding Against Starter Gear

I don't know if this is unusual or not, but when I hit the starter pedal on my 48 A, the gears on the starter motor and flywheel sometimes don't mesh up and they grind against each other. It sounds awful and I'm afraid if this happens too often the gears will quickly wear. My dad doesn't recall this happening on the tractor prior to me restoring it. Is there something I can check for or need to do to keep this from happening?

When the starter gear moves to the left towards the ring gear, should it be moving straight over or should it be rotating. If I understand how a Bendix mechanism works, the starter gear should rotate as it moves towards to the ring gear until it meshes and reaches the end of its travel. Mine does not rotate; it moves straight over. Sometimes it meshes and sometimes it doesn't. Am I correct in my thinking?

Mike, the starter drive won't rotate until the linkage lever overtravels enough to push the contact button on the starter switch. [well past initial engagement].
~If the flywheel is in good shape [teeth aren't torn up] pull the starter out & look for wear or sticking in the starter drive, starter bushings & linkage. If an obvious problem isn't noted, replace the starter drive.
~Make sure you don't have excessive crankshaft end play [should be .005"-.010"]. If over 3/16" that could be adding to your problem..... .

My B did this once ,don't know why.You may want to remove starter and check bendix and bushings for lubrication.
