I am a frequent visitor of this website and appreciate it greatly. I have a problem with the 700-r4 automatic transmission slipping in 3rd and overdrive on my 91 chevy 2500 2 wheel drive pick up. After getting a few quotes on repair I have decided to tackle this project on my own. I keep getting warned by salvage yards, when I enquire about a replacement, that if the shift cable isnt adjusted properly it can destroy the replacement. One salvage yard even refused to sell me one since I havent adjusted this shift cable before. I can't seem to find a shift cable on my tranny. I see the shift linkage and have adjusted it on my tranny hoping that would be the solution but there was no change. If anyone has any experience with these trannys or could recommend a sight where I could obtain some information, I would be very gracious...thanks.

Todd

You will probably need to new trans. Pull pan off and inspect for metal. The cable is a TV (throttle valve) cable. You press button and slide cable to front. Go inside and press gas pedal to floor and let up, that is the sdjustment. (Do not do by hand from under hood). Changing fluid and adding anything will probaby not help. There were alot of update to this transmission. I recommend bringing this to somebody who knows what they are doing.

Todd, the cable they are talking about is the kickdown cable. It runs from the carburetor (accelerator) linkage to the transmission, and tells the transmission the throttle position. It controls transmission oil pressure I believe, and if it is mis-adjusted can cause a freshly rebuilt 700-R4 to cook itself in very short (a few miles) order. As far as sites to go to, I'd just recommend going to www.google.com and doing the following search: +700R4 +rebuild +help You should get quite a few sites to choose from.

I'm not sure it is the same problem, but I had trouble with my Mercury GM about two years ago. Driving on the highway I would get a chatter like I was driving on a washboard gravel road. Thought it was tires. Long story shortened - needed an oil change in the trans. Also added an additive. Problem is gone and has not returned. I'm not sure if Transmission Specialties is part of a chain, but they flushed the trans until fluid runs clean.
