Crank Seal (AD2743R) on A 35 D. What is it?

I am working on an oil leak coming from the crankshaft on the flywheel side of the engine. It is on a 1935 JD D.

I took the flywheel and oil slinger housing off. The cork seal is as hard as rock. I called John Deere for the seal. They can get it.

The parts department told me there is another seal on the same side which I cannot find. They said the part number is AD2743R. What is this seal? They said it is obsolete and cannot be purchased. I have no idea where it goes. Any help would be appreciated.

Cheg, the AD2743R is the original flywheel spacer with the seal already in it, [NLA]. The spacer was subbed to a later assembly, but needed the late cover to go with it...

I am not sure what assembly I have. What does the later housing look like? I only have the housing where the cork oil seal fits and the oil slinger.

Is there a required gap between the flywheel and oil slinger housing?

Thanks

Cheg, I really can't tell you how to tell the difference in housings as I haven't worked on a 35 D in years.
~Give me the casting number & I will try to look it up for you.
~The flywheel should have some clearance to the housing [no specified gap] & the slinger should be centered in the housing opening. The crankshaft should have .005"-.010" end play when done.

The casting number was hard to read but I think it is: D1783R

If I have the old housing, does that mean I am at a dead end and will have to find the new housing? If I put in the new cork seal, and use the old housing, will I still have an oil leak?

Thanks

Cheg, you have the later [109944] up cover & the AD 2743R spacer/seal is used with the older D1054 cover.
~Just installing a new cork seal should get you up & going.
I can't say if it will still have an oil leak, but if the cork seal is installed correctly & the main bearing isn't too loose at least it won't be leaking at the flywheel spacer..

Clooney,

I really appreciate your help. Your knowledge and advice has been very valuable with my 1935-"D" restoration.

Thanks.
